Originally the kingdom of Abomey in the 17th Century, it came
under French domination by the end of the 19th Century. In 1904
the region was incorporated into French West Africa. As Dahomey,
the country became independent on August 1, 1960 and in 1975 the
name was changed to Benin. In 1972, Colonel Ahmed Kerekou took
power in the fifth coup since independence and declared a
socialist state. The economy is based almost entirely on
agriculturally based industries. @
